MRRJ takes a photograph during intake and enables images in applicable current roster records. The public roster is configured to show current offenders only. Once a person drops from that display, the official path is a narrow request for the existing adult booking photograph tied to the correct booking. The Augusta Sheriff is a possible custodian only when it created or holds an arrest image. MRRJ is the better first contact for an MRRJ intake photograph.

Augusta Mugshot Policy Details
MRRJ’s intake page confirms that booking includes a photograph. Its roster configuration says images are enabled, yet it also sets showCurrentOffendersOnly:true. That flag suppresses released-person search tools. A separate software value of 400 release-retention days does not create public access because the live configuration remains current only.
Virginia Code §2.2-3706(A)(1) generally requires release on request of an adult arrestee photograph taken during routine initial booking. The photograph may be withheld while release would jeopardize a felony investigation. Juvenile, sealed, expunged, security, victim, witness, or other lawfully restricted information can also be withheld or redacted.

That source proves a photograph is created at intake. It does not prove the person was later released.
Note: A booking photograph proves that an image was made during intake, not guilt, disposition, or present custody status.
Request Augusta Released Booking Photos

Give the full name, date of birth if known, booking number if known, and a narrow date range. Ask for an electronic copy and a cost estimate.
- Identify the exact MRRJ booking rather than asking for a broad mugshot list.
- Request the routine initial adult booking photograph as its own record.
- Request the related intake and release sheet separately if release also needs confirmation.
- Ask MRRJ to redact exempt fields rather than withhold an otherwise releasable record in full.
- Set a cost threshold and ask for an itemized estimate before work above it begins.
- If MRRJ is not the custodian, ask it to identify the known agency that holds the image.
Virginia FOIA permits oral or written requests, but writing preserves the person, booking, scope, and dates. The agency usually must respond within five working days by producing records, citing a withholding, producing redacted records, reporting no record and a known referral, or invoking lawful extra time. Charges may reflect reasonable search, access, copying, and supply costs. An estimate over $200 may require a deposit.

The FOIA contact is the durable photo route after the current public roster stops showing the person.
Read the agency’s response on its own terms. A produced image should be matched to the named booking before use. A redacted response should remain redacted; do not reconstruct blocked details from another source. If MRRJ withholds the photo, keep the cited legal basis and consider whether a narrower request for the routine initial adult photograph resolves the concern. When the jail reports that it has no record, follow any known custodian referral and verify that the episode did not belong to another jail, the Sheriff, VADOC, or a different date.
Verify Augusta Release Separately
A photograph and release record should be treated as two records. Ask MRRJ for intake date and time, actual release date and time, release disposition or type, releasing facility, booking identifiers, and any releasable transfer destination. A photograph shows the intake identity. The release sheet shows the later custody change. A transfer to VADOC, another jail, USMS, or ICE is not return to the community.
The MRRJ roster cannot fill this gap. A person absent from it may have been released, moved to a state prison, sent to another custodian, entered under different data, or not yet processed. Jail VINE can add a person-specific custody-change event, and the relevant Augusta court can explain bond or case disposition. For a named release search, use the Augusta County release-record route.
Augusta State Offender Photos
The VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator covers current state custody and community supervision, including some people held in regional jails under state authority. Official locator documentation reviewed for Augusta did not promise that results include a photograph. Do not call it a mugshot search unless the live matched result actually shows an image.
For a historical VADOC photo, request an existing releasable identification image through the institution, district, or VADOC FOIA office. Include the seven-digit DOC ID and the relevant facility or supervision period. Ask separately for actual release status and date. A state identification photograph may come from a different episode than an MRRJ booking image, so do not merge them merely because the names match.
VINELink photo availability also varies with the contributing source. A VINE status event can help document a custody change, but the service is informational and does not replace the agency’s release sheet or photo record.
Augusta Mugshots Beyond Agencies
Commercial aggregators and local news archives may keep a dated image after an official roster no longer shows it. Their copy can be stale, detached from the case result, or matched to the wrong person. No commercial mugshot publisher should be used to confirm release, and no pay-to-remove service should be treated as an official correction path. Return to the custodian and court when the facts conflict.
A local news or agency press item documents what was published on its date. It may show an arrest photograph, but it does not provide a live custody status. Read the publication date, named agency, charge context, and later court disposition. Keep the image’s source distinct from the MRRJ booking record.
Note: An independently reposted image may outlast an official record display and still fail to reflect the later case outcome.
Augusta Mugshot Sealing and Removal
Virginia’s §8.01-40.3 creates civil liability when a publisher maintains charge or arrest criminal-history information and solicits, requests, or accepts money or value to remove it, subject to statutory exceptions. The law does not make all adult booking photographs confidential. It also does not require every lawful publisher to delete an image on demand.
Virginia distinguishes traditional expungement from newer sealing routes. A qualifying sealed or expunged matter may leave ordinary official search access under the order and governing chapter. Eligibility, exclusions, waiting periods, procedure, and limits depend on the case. Use the live Virginia sealing statutes and court forms rather than assuming a dismissal automatically removes every image.
An order affecting agency access does not prove that every independent old publication vanished. For an official MRRJ record, direct a question about access or correction to MRRJ. For a court record, use the Augusta clerk and the entered order. Avoid sending extra personal details to an unrelated publisher.
Traditional expungement under Chapter 23.1 primarily addresses outcomes such as acquittal, nolle prosequi, dismissal, and specified identity circumstances. The newer Chapter 23.2 sealing system has automatic and petition routes with offense limits, waiting rules, exclusions, procedures, and lifetime caps. A booking photo request should therefore be checked against the specific entered order and current law. Do not assume that every dismissal erases the photo, or that a photo’s continued appearance proves the official record remains open.
Match Augusta Photo Records
Use the most exact identifier available. Match the MRRJ offender, permanent, or booking number; compare date of birth, booking date, charge locality, and court case; and use the seven-digit DOC ID for VADOC. Two people with the same name are not one record. Record the source URL, the date checked, and whether the image came from a current roster, agency response, court file, or dated publication.
Limit collection to what the release question needs. If an image seems wrong, contact the office that created the record rather than trying to correct it through inference. Preserve the distinction in any notes: “MRRJ booking photograph from the identified intake” states what the image is. It does not turn the photo into an actual release certificate. This keeps a dated image from being mistaken for present custody or a later case outcome.
