Middle River Jail Release Role
Middle River Regional Jail is the operative adult local jail for Augusta County, Staunton, Waynesboro, Harrisonburg, and Rockingham County. It is run by the Middle River Regional Jail Authority, not as a standalone Augusta County jail. The facility is at 350 Technology Drive, Staunton, VA 24401. Its main number is 540-245-5420. The lobby is open 24 hours, while listed business hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
MRRJ holds both local detainees and state-responsible people awaiting transfer to VADOC. That mixed role changes the meaning of release. Bond, dismissal, or completion of a local sentence may lead to the community. A state transfer, move to another jail, USMS transport, or ICE handoff means the person left MRRJ but stayed in custody.

Lookup Middle River Jail Releases
Start with the MRRJ public roster. It accepts first, middle, and last name, gender, offender or permanent ID, and intake-date range. A matched current record may show intake details, status, identifiers, dynamic record sections, and a photo. The agency configuration is explicitly current only. It exposes no public release-date range, released-status selector, or 24-hour and 72-hour release lists.
- Search the MRRJ current roster once with a full name or exact identifier.
- If listed, treat the person as still shown in MRRJ custody until the jail confirms otherwise.
- If absent, search Virginia Jail VINE for a named release or custody-change event.
- Check Augusta General District or Circuit Court for the bond, dismissal, sentence, or later order.
- Search VADOC when a state sentence or supervision is possible.
- Request MRRJ’s existing release sheet for documentary proof.
A no-result can reflect release, transfer, spelling, delay, or another jurisdiction. The full Augusta County released-person search provides the broader custody-specific sequence.
Note: Current-roster absence narrows the inquiry but never proves that a person returned to the community.
Middle River Jail Release Records
Direct an MRRJ booking request to Amanda Lamb, FOIA Officer, at alamb@mrrjva.gov or 540-245-5420 extension 1242. Mail may be sent to the jail address. Identify the full name, date of birth if known, booking number if known, and a narrow date range. Ask for existing records rather than asking staff to create a released-person list.
The useful fields are intake date and time, actual release date and time, release disposition or type, releasing facility, booking identifiers, and any transfer destination that is public and releasable. Request the routine adult booking photograph separately. Ask for electronic copies and an advance estimate. Under Virginia FOIA, a custodian generally has five working days to produce, cite a withholding, provide redacted records, report no records and a known referral, or invoke lawful extra time.
| Field | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| Booking identifier | The specific MRRJ custody episode |
| Intake date and time | When MRRJ recorded entry |
| Release date and time | When the facility recorded exit |
| Disposition or release type | Bond, sentence completion, dismissal, transfer, or other recorded reason |
| Transfer destination | The next custodian when lawfully releasable |
| Booking photograph | The image created at intake, not proof of release |
The MRRJ FOIA page is the official request route. The Augusta Sheriff may hold arrest, incident, or transport records, but it is not necessarily custodian of MRRJ’s jail record.
Fees are limited to reasonable access, search, copying, and supply costs under Virginia FOIA. Ask for an estimate before processing, especially when archived work may be needed.
Middle River Jail Exit Process
The MRRJ handbook says release occurs after sentence completion, dismissal, or posting bond. Sentence-completion releases are processed each morning at a designated time, though no exact clock time is published. Bond and dismissal releases depend on the triggering process and should not be forced into that morning schedule.
During a final release, the person cleans the assigned area, reports to booking, changes clothing, returns jail-issued items, and receives the remaining account funds by card or check. The person signs Property Release and Inmate Account forms and supplies a forwarding address. Any account or property discrepancy should be raised before signing. Medication held by the jail requires contact with the medical department after release.
Property authorized to another person during custody uses a different process. The inmate must submit authorization, Intake must arrange the pickup, and the published window is Wednesday or Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. That pickup is not proof that final release occurred.
Why Middle River Jail Opened
MRRJ opened on April 1, 2006 after years of planning to relieve overcrowding at the former Augusta County Jail. Augusta County, Staunton, and Waynesboro formed the initial regional group. Rockingham County and Harrisonburg became full members in 2015. The official site describes a 212,020-square-foot building on 28 acres near the I-81 and I-64 interchange, with a rated capacity of 396 that holds men and women.
That history is not mere background. Older Augusta records may name the former county jail, while newer local records route through MRRJ. State records may instead name Augusta Correctional Center, a separate VADOC prison that closed in 2024. Match the facility and date before choosing a locator or requesting a release sheet.
Note: A facility name from an old case may identify the historic custodian, not the person’s present location.
Middle River Release Court Check
Augusta General District Court handles misdemeanors, bond matters, and felony preliminary stages. Augusta Circuit Court handles felony trials and appeals. Both adult court sources can explain why jail custody may have ended. Neither provides the exact MRRJ exit minute, so pair the order or disposition with the jail release record.
At intake, a magistrate first decides recognizance or bail. Arraignment later reviews bond, counsel, and the next date. Cash bond may be posted to the magistrate or court, and jail staff cannot recommend a bonding company. A bond release ends physical jail custody while the criminal case remains pending.
Use the Virginia court case-information hub, select Augusta in General District search, and check Circuit if the felony advanced. A sealed, expunged, juvenile, misspelled, or nonparticipating record may not appear online.
Middle River Jail Transfers
State-responsible people can remain at MRRJ while VADOC calculates or controls their sentence. When they move to a VADOC institution, the local roster entry ends without community release. Search the VADOC locator by seven-digit DOC ID and read location, status, and date as separate fields.
Virginia Jail VINE and VADOC VINE are separate notification tracks. An eligible victim’s local registration does not automatically follow a transfer into the state system. USMS and ICE transfers also require the receiving agency’s record. A release from one custodian can coexist with ongoing detention by another.
| MRRJ exit | Next confirmation |
|---|---|
| Community after bond or dismissal | MRRJ release sheet, Jail VINE, and court order |
| Local sentence completion | MRRJ release sheet and computation record |
| VADOC transfer | VADOC locator and status record |
| Another jail | Receiving jail roster or records office |
| Federal or immigration custodian | BOP, ICE, court, or agency record as applicable |
Note: Name the receiving agency when an MRRJ exit is a transfer, since custody continues after the local record closes.
Middle River Release Limits
MRRJ’s configuration includes a software value called releasedRetentionDays:400, but the same live configuration restricts public display to current offenders. The value cannot be described as 400 days of public released-profile access. Historical proof belongs in the release record, a saved VINE event, a court record, or the receiving system’s status record.
Keep identities precise. Use the offender, permanent, or booking identifier where available, and compare date of birth, booking date, charge locality, and court case. Record when the roster was checked. If agency sources conflict, ask the source office to resolve its own record rather than combining two people or two bookings by inference.
