Augusta Correctional Center Is Closed

Augusta Correctional Center was a Virginia Department of Corrections state prison in Craigsville. It was not Middle River Regional Jail and did not function as Augusta County’s local booking facility. VADOC officially closed the prison at the end of June and start of July 2024. It is no longer a current custody destination.

VADOC said affected prisoners were relocated according to classification and security needs. A person disappearing from Augusta Correctional Center during that process was transferred, not automatically released. Do not publish an old phone number as a current facility contact, promise an active roster, or direct a family to the closed property for current status.

The notice establishes that closure meant relocation through state corrections, not a mass discharge.

Augusta Prison Closure Record

The closed-prison name remains useful because older court, VADOC, correspondence, and family records may identify Augusta Correctional Center as the institution. Treat that name as a historical starting point. The next task is to locate the later state record and determine whether it shows a new institution, community supervision, release, or complete discharge.

This history also prevents a local-jail error. MRRJ opened as the adult regional jail serving Augusta and partner localities, while Augusta Correctional Center was a state institution. An MRRJ release sheet will not establish the later outcome of a VADOC prisoner merely because both facilities are in Augusta County.

Current proposals or public discussion about the closed prison property do not make it an active correctional facility. Only an official VADOC announcement could establish a new detention role. Until then, use the statewide system for a named former prisoner.

Locate Former Augusta Prisoners

Use the VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator. Search by seven-digit DOC ID when known. The name route requires at least the first three letters of the first name and the full last name; optional age, gender, race, and location fields help separate people with similar names. VADOC updates the tool daily and warns that its data can be inaccurate or old.

1. Take the DOC ID and full identity fields from the old Augusta Correctional Center record.
2. Search the statewide locator and match more than the name.
3. Read correctional status, location, and date as separate items.
4. If another institution appears, treat the person as in physical state custody.
5. If a probation or parole district appears, treat the person as in the community under supervision.
6. If no match appears, request written status rather than claiming discharge.

Read Augusta Correctional Status

A VADOC institution result means continuing correctional custody. A local or regional jail result under VADOC authority can also mean the person remains state responsible. A probation or parole district result means community supervision rather than prison. A future release date is a projection, even when the screen uses a shorter label. None of those states should be inferred from a blank search.

Operating Procedure 050.1 recognizes correctional status, projected parole eligibility, mandatory parole, good-time release, custody or parole status, and facility location as public status fields subject to restrictions. An undisclosed-location code can bar confirmation. No location response therefore does not prove release.

Request Augusta Prison Release Records

For an actual VADOC event, ask for correctional status, actual date released from physical custody, discharge versus parole or transfer, releasing facility, releasable release notice or order, and community-supervision start and end dates. Include the seven-digit DOC ID, full name, and the known Augusta Correctional Center period. A focused request helps staff trace the historic file into the later record.

Virginia FOIA ordinarily provides five working days for a response that produces records, cites a withholding, provides redacted records, reports that records cannot be found with a known referral, or invokes lawful extra time. VADOC Procedure 050.1 lists ten cents per page plus actual postage or shipping for covered copies and may charge actual labor for archived or database work. Ask for an advance estimate.

Note: Request the later statewide status record, not a new “closed-prison release list” that VADOC may not maintain.

Confirm Augusta Actual Release

VADOC’s facility-release page says a person who satisfies the sentence leaves on discharge or parole and receives a notification-of-release letter. On release day, the applicable Order of Release, Conditions of Probation, or Conditions of Parole is read or provided and signed and dated by the person and a staff witness. Those documents are stronger proof than an old planned date.

VADOC says release takes place by 11:59 p.m. on the release date, weather permitting. It returns personal property and applicable funds, may arrange bus transportation, and may provide clothing or medication under state rules. A detainer changes the destination. VADOC can finish its sentence and send the person directly to another authority, which is release from VADOC but not release to the community.

Pair that process with the named person’s signed or written status record before reporting community release.

Note: A signed VADOC release record proves the state event, while a detainer record identifies any next custodian.

Augusta Prison Release Dates

A former Augusta Correctional Center prisoner may have a projected good-time date, a mandatory-parole date, a parole-eligibility date, an actual physical-custody release date, and a later supervision-discharge date. These labels are not interchangeable. Quote the record and date checked. If a future date appears, identify it as the current projection in context.

VADOC Time Computation handles active Earned Sentence Credit terms longer than 12 months and applicable older parole-eligible or Good Conduct Allowance sentence combinations. Sentence credits, disciplinary forfeiture, pretrial credit, concurrent or consecutive terms, amended orders, parole action, detainers, and calculation corrections can change a projection.

Augusta Post-Prison Supervision

A district result in the VADOC locator means the person is in the community under active supervision. Augusta-area assignments can route through Staunton Probation and Parole, District 12, at 134 Rowe Road, Staunton, VA 24401, 540-332-7780. Call the office to confirm a particular assignment rather than relying on a directory’s area text.

Parole is conditional release from a parole-eligible state sentence. Probation is ordered by a court and can follow confinement or begin without a prison stay. Either can continue after the physical release date. Completion of supervision is a later discharge event that may cause a person to leave the public locator’s active scope.

An absconder allegation, violation, or warrant does not erase the historical release. It may lead to renewed custody. Confirm the current status through VADOC, the responsible court, and law enforcement rather than relying on the limited Most Wanted page.

Augusta Prison and Jail Records

Do not send a former Augusta Correctional Center inquiry to MRRJ merely because both serve records connected to Augusta County. MRRJ is an adult regional jail with local bookings and some state-responsible people awaiting transfer. Augusta Correctional Center was a VADOC prison. The statewide DOC record controls its location, release date, and supervision path.

Older records can name both facilities at different points. A person might first be booked at MRRJ, receive a state sentence, transfer to Augusta Correctional Center, move to another VADOC prison during closure, and later enter District 12 supervision. Each record proves one link. The MRRJ release page applies only to the regional-jail episode.
